About UsRoute 66
Established on November 11, 1926, Route 66 was championed by Tulsa’s own Cyrus Avery. By 1938, it became the first major U.S. road fully paved from end to end. After World War II, the Mother Road fueled a golden age of motels, diners, roadside attractions, and neon signs lighting up the landscape. The Interstate Highway Act of 1956 gradually pulled traffic away, and by 1985 Route 66 was officially removed from the U.S. Highway System. Now, 100 years later, the road refuses to disappear, its iconic glow still connecting people across Tulsa and beyond.
